Illness

How do I get a general practitioner?

Answer

The healthcare system in the Netherlands may work differently than in your home country. If you are ill, you must first visit a GP (huisarts). The GP decides whether you need to be referred to a specialist. But first, you need to be registered with a GP practice.

Many EU citizens do not register with a Dutch GP and wait until they return to their home country to see a doctor. That might feel more familiar, but your symptoms can get worse, which can be risky.

In the Netherlands, the GP is your first point of contact for care. The problem is that many GP practices are full and no longer accept new patients. This makes it difficult to get help when you need it. Especially if you’ve just arrived in the Netherlands.

Do you have this problem? Information Point Zuidoost-Brabant works together with several GP practices in the region. They know where you can still register and help you find a practice. Visit the Inwonersplein at Eindhoven city hall to get their help!
