6 Dutch habits you will need to get used to

The Netherlands. The land of cheese, windmills, and… a few peculiar habits! If you’ve just started working here, you might find yourself raising an eyebrow at times. The Dutch certainly have their own way of doing things. Logical? Not always. Funny? Absolutely. But don’t worry, we’ll help you navigate the culture shock!

Lunch = bread

In many European countries, lunch is a serious, warm meal. But in the Netherlands? Around noon, people pull out their lunchboxes. The contents? A simple sandwich with cheese, peanut butter, or—believe it or not—chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag).

To be fair, Dutch people are slowly experimenting with more variety, from salads to last night’s leftovers. But a sandwich will always be the go-to favorite.

Cycling is a lifestyle. And an extreme sport.

The Netherlands has more bikes than people. And the Dutch ride their bikes as if they’re competing in the Tour de France. Traffic lights? Road rules? They often seem optional.

So always watch out for cyclists when you’re out and about. Look twice before crossing the street. And if you’re driving, be extra cautious at roundabouts and intersections.

Just act normal…

…that’s crazy enough. The Dutch are among the most direct people in the world. They say exactly what they think—no sugarcoating, no unnecessary niceties.

Did a new colleague just tell you that you handled something poorly? That doesn’t mean they dislike you. It’s just the Dutch way of communicating. Take it as honest, constructive feedback!

Even spontaneous plans are scheduled

Want to meet up with a Dutch person? Better grab your agenda. Because spontaneous visits? Not a thing here.

A last-minute dinner or drinks? Forget it. The Dutch plan their social lives like a military operation. If you want to see someone, start with: “Are you free on Thursday at 7:30 PM… in five weeks?”

Birthday circles and endless congratulations

Dutch birthdays—especially among the older generation—follow a strict ritual. You walk in, shake hands with everyone (yes, everyone), and congratulate them on the birthday person. Then, you take a seat in a circle and chat about the weather while enjoying cake (or vlaai in the south of the country).

Complaining about the weather – even when it’s nice

If there’s one thing all Dutch people agree on, it’s that the weather is never quite right. It’s always too wet, too cold, or too hot. Even on a perfect day, there’s something to complain about—because good weather never lasts long.

Want to blend in? Casually say: “What typical Dutch weather, huh?” Congratulations, you’re officially one of us.

Yes, the Netherlands has its fair share of strange habits. But you’ll get used to them. And before you know it, you’ll be guilty of them too!
